    Happy Anniversary, Vacation Boy Blog

This blog is three years old.  Not exactly but pretty close.  It all started when I was going to Cape Cod for a 30-day writing retreat.  I know myself well enough to know that, left to my own devices, I could easily have squandered away the month without writing a single word or note.  You were my accountability.

That retreat was life-changing, as I had hoped it would be.  I wrote things during that trip that I still go back and pull from, and there are songs still in process, and even some that I've finished that no one has heard yet, mostly because of my own insecurities.

One of the lyrics written during that month was nominated for Song Of The Year this year at the fan awards.  It didn't win, but it was nominated, which is kinda the same without the added chore of having to dust an award.  :)

I think I need another retreat.  A jolt of some kind.  Or maybe I just need to let myself take some time off to be inspired.  I have the new Pat Conroy book and perhaps I just need to dive into that and fall in love with words again.

I'll keep you posted, but thanks for reading these past three years.

Happy Anniversary, been reading for almost the entire three years. You've never fail to inspire me and amaze with your lyrics. By the way, just got a copy today in the mail of "In the Day of the Lord" that we wrote last time I was in Nashville. I love the final product. I wasn't much help to you in putting it together but you were kind to me anyway! Hoping to see you at WAJ this year. Keep on blogging - we are listening. Jim E. Davis

How strange to read that your blog is THREE years old, and then to realize I've been reading it from day one. I'm getting old. Happy Anniversary! .... BTW: "Traditional" 3rd anniversary gift is leather. I vote Vacation Boy treats himself.

I remember sitting in the sanctuary at WAJ the October after you got back from the cape. You shared some of the stuff you had written. Writer to writer, you inspired me. Friend to friend, you blessed me, and made me thankful to know you.

I vote retreat. I read a summary of a book called "Iconoclasts". It was about great creative thinkers like Walt Disney and Einstein. But what the theory boiled down to was if you want to think differently, sometimes that requires putting ourself in a new location. New sites, new sounds, different routine. . . it causes you to use your brain a little differently, burning different neuro patterns and sparking different ideas. I'm amazed at how many ideas I get when I travel. . . I'm thinking Grand Cayman would suit you well. But not during WAJ, please. You are irreplaceable on that schedule. :-D

Hey, Guy. LOnnng time. Have I told you, I am just plain jealous of you, living out there in Santa Barbara. I was privileged to spend most of a week on two separate occasions there. Many, many years ago now. At the time, I told Sharron, if I ever got the opportunity to take a job and move to Santa Barbara, the only question; was she coming along or did I have to go by myself.

Just found the blog today. Kinda looking for what I could find on you these days, as I have sorta met the parents-in-law (they are in our Bible study class, but I have only seen them one time) of a young lady that might be looking for some new lyrics. The young lady can sing, and I know she has produced one CD locally, but I don't really know if she has the music bug as a career.

Those were good pictures on your blog. I am referring to the photography not the subjects. course a couple of them weren't bad.

When you head down Houston way, we would love to see you again.

I have really enjoyed your blog and missed your relatively frequent updates. When I buy a CD - the first listen is with the cover in my hand to see who wrote the songs. I am amazed at how often it is Joel Lindsey - and also how much you write jointly.

You are indeed a masterful writer, a master at your craft.

I am a promoter of the idea that there should be a songwriter award - for non-performing. I love Rodney Griffin and stand amazed at some of the words he puts on paper, but people like you, Wilkinson and others should be rocognized.

Take a break... Enjoy yourself... But, please keep writing. SG needs you!

Perhaps we should make this an impromptu holiday. We could call it the “Thank You Joel Day”, and celebrate by reminding such a great man how many lives he’s touched by his work. Maybe we could get all of his family, friends, and fans to pool resources together and buy him a present. I suggest a trip to Paris. I’d be more than happy to pitch in on that.

Then again, money could never begin to give you the thanks you deserve. Your words inspired me to drag myself out of my own deathbed and give life another shot. You’re a good man, and you’ve more than earned a vacation. So thanks, for just being you.

    How’s that for some inspiration?
